Among the most difficult of all trees to propagate, it’s worth every frustrating effort to succeed. We have grown this plant in small numbers for years and only recently felt audacious enough to list it. Extremely rare and probably always will be. Smaller in stature than the ubiquitous Columnar European Hornbeam, mature specimens rarely exceed 18’ x 18’. Easy to grow, its 8-10” long flowers inspire the name, ‘Monkeytail Hornbeam’. Our selection comes from Dan Hinkley, legendary horticulturist and human spirit.
