The common name derives from its foliage, arranged in whorls to form a parasol-like appearance. Shrubby habit but tree-like in size, its flowers are unremarkable and have a rather disagreeable odor. Due to leaves that may exceed two feet in length and are quite a sight, this American native is sometimes confused with Magnolia macrophylla. The difference: M. macrophylla leaves are silver beneath.
