Named to honor Nicholas Garry of the Hudson's Bay Company, this is the climax species of the pre-1850’s Willamette Valley oak savanna. We see occasional remnants of these original trees, some of which measure more than 5' in diameter and exceed 300 years old. These are truly heritage trees, having sheltered and fed the Kalapuya Indians, who gathered acorns by the ton and processed them to make thick soup and flatbread.
